OK time for another update...

Baby Rankin #4 is plugging right along and is allowed to come any day now (small hospital without a NICU, so they want to be safe --nearest NICU is an hour away). The monkey wrench in all of this is that Grandma (the person that the older girls will be staying with) isn't coming till next week - hopefully by about Thursday the 14th. If this little boy decides to come any earlier than that, we are in a bit of a situation as to who is going to watch our girlies. I've had a co-worker tells me that she will be my 'night time nanny' (Steve still works overnight Sunday through Thursday nights) ...but I don't want to call her in the middle of the night LOL. We shall see.

Tuesday I had a bit of a 'scare' thinking that "this was it." I don't usually 'feel' contractions till after my water breaks. (Blessed, or cursed I'm still not sure) But Tuesday night while I was making cobbling something together for dinner, I was feeling sharp painful menstrual like pains that were lasting longer than three seconds, a lot longer! They were fairly constant. After dinner was 'done' and everyone was eating something I went and laid down, had some water to drink and the contractions went away (phew). Was told today that if that happens again that they'd like to talk to me... hahaha ok...

I have been really bad about taking pictures of my belly lately... Maybe I ought to get on that :)

 This one's from 35 weeks... (2 1/2 weeks ago)

...compare to almost 35 weeks with Holly... wow

I am hoping this little guy is a bit smaller than she was... 8 1/2 pounds really hurt and tore me something awful! (Of course that may have something to do with the way she SHOT out of me, like a cannon)

I also talked to the Dr today about Essure when all this is said and done, four kids (and one's a boy to boot :) ) is about our limit and my body has not liked this pregnancy, that and I'm 35 later this year which is when Steve and I decided that we would officially be done birthing children. Family history also dictates that I should be done. It's a daunting decision, but I think it's a good one.

OK, I have other children too... Faith had another eye Dr appointment recently cause she failed an eye test at school, even with her glasses. Her prescription did change slightly, and she's getting new frames. The novelty of glasses has worn off, but she's glad to be getting some different frames. Standard State testing is this year in school for her. She excels in school but has a bit of trepidation about taking them. I keep raying for her nerves and memory, and I know she's going to do well.

Megan and Faith are both in an after school program one day a week called Odyssey of the Mind: it is an "international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program" They are having fun!

Holly comes with me to the daycare when I am there (once or twice a week at this point). I am hoping that after the baby is born that I can keep her going about one day a week, just to keep her in 'practice.' She continues to make me laugh on a (mostly) daily basis, and yet we keep telling her that she has a temperament to match her hair color (it's red!). We are *still* working on training her to use the potty consistently... she is naked from the waist down most days that we are at home, she get's it, she just doesn't seem to care if there are panties or a pull-up on... I have all but given up - she won't want to wear diapers forever (I hope).

Remembering 2012

So it's been TWO yeas since I posted anything... No real excuse, just lazy. So I thought I'd give a sort of year in review... but if you got out Christmas letter, you've read most of this already. As the new year starts, though I do hope to get a few more posts in on here - in case anyone still looks and/or cares. And with a new baby (BOY) on the way, I'm sure that somebody will want a few updates (then again, I don't know). So here's our annual Christmas letter, which is also a sort of year in review... it's a long one :)

~~~~~~~~~~
Well I suppose it’s that time of the year again. Time to tell all of you our family and friends, what we, the Rankin’s have been up to this past year.
This year got off to a kind of slow start. Late in February, Faith came home from school with a paper that said they had done regular vision screenings and that we would need to take her to an eye Dr for follow-up. This resulted in Faith getting glasses. We think she’s really cute with them! She liked them at first, she could see better, after all. Now, though, the novelty has worn off and she’s kind of tired of them.
Faith's new glasses
In March we celebrated 8 years of having Faith in our family. She got many presents, but her favorite of the day was a guitar! She has tried to learn a bit how to play, but quickly put that aside. She will still get it out from time to time to pick at it a bit.
In May Faith and Megan got baptized! This is a very big deal for us, as it shows our church family that they have previously asked Jesus into their hearts and lives. Also in May we decided that Faith could have her own space. What this really meant was that since our upstairs doesn’t keep temperature very well (HOT in the summer, COLD in the winter), we cleaned out a corner of our basement (much more temperate) and did the corner up so that Faith has her own ‘room.’ We painted it pink, and had intentions on doing blue and purple circles and dots all over, but as of this writing, they’ve yet to be done... we’ve gotten a little side tracked. And now Faith and Megan have decided to switch rooms, Faith is upstairs again with Holly and Megan is in the basement.
Another thing that happened in May was the birth of a very special little girl. Christina’s boss, Sara, at the daycare where she works part time, was having problems with her pregnancy. She was 27 weeks along when some issues from the complications came up and the Drs in Pittsburgh (where Sara was) decided that both lives would be saved if the baby was born. Makayla Hope came into the world 13 weeks too soon (that’s three months)! This little girl is such a trouper, though, she has been through 2-3 surgeries in her tummy and bowels. She has only been home (as of this writing) a grand total of about 4 weeks during her short 7 months of life (and is currently back in the hospital). This doesn’t come close to telling her whole ‘story,’ but it’s important to Christina. If you think about Makayla, please a say prayer for her and her family, she has a big brother in kindergarten this year and a big sister that will be in kindergarten next fall. They are such a sweet family.
In June Steve and Christina had a bit of a surprise as we found out that we are expecting another child come February 2013. While this wasn’t a planned pregnancy, we know that God has great things in store this baby, or HE would not have let this pregnancy happen. Christina had an early ultrasound to determine an actual due date (Feb 24th), but we haven’t had a baby on a due date yet, so we are not counting on it being that late in Feb. So far it’s been a pretty uneventful pregnancy (a bit more later though).
The rest of our summer consisted of feeding some ducks at a nearby ‘spring.’ Picking Strawberries with Christina’s mom group. Grandmum visiting! We always love it when she come to visit!! Picking blueberries with Christina’s mom’s group, this time we took Grandmum! Christina’s brother Michael and his wife Morgan giving birth to Cousin James. A bat getting into the house, yikes! And a big trip!
Uncle Mike and cousin James
The Bat Attack (OK, not really an attack)... It seems that somehow a bat got into the house and found it’s way downstairs (remember, Faith’s room is/was down there). As Christina was giving kisses to Faith this night we noticed something flying around. We thought it may be just a big moth or something like that, but it was enough to drive Faith to sleep upstairs with her sisters anyway. After Christina went to bed, she was AWAKENED by something flying about. Once she figured out that this was NOT a moth but a bat, she screamed and high tailed it out of the room, turning on every light she could without waking any kiddos. When Steve arrived home a bit later, he found the culprit lying on the floor of the bedroom rather stunned by all the light, picked it up (with gloved hands) and escorted it outside. He thought the whole thing was fairly comical, and was more sorry for the bat. In retrospect, Christina supposes it was comical, but at the time it was rather scary. Upon further inspection of the downstairs, there doesn’t seem to be any more or any other way for such a critter to get in. Let’s hope it doesn’t happen again!
The poor bat...
Our big trip! In August, the church got a group of folks together for a trip to Kentucky to the Creation Museum (http://creationmuseum.org/). From the websight: “The state-of-the-art 70,000 square foot museum brings the pages of the Bible to life, casting its characters and animals in dynamic form and placing them in familiar settings. Adam and Eve live in the Garden of Eden. Children play and dinosaurs roam near Eden’s Rivers. The serpent coils cunningly in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Majestic murals, great masterpieces brimming with pulsating colors and details, provide a backdrop for many of the settings.” There is so much to tell about this trip, our suggestion is to click around the websight. We have SO many pictures and could have stayed a couple of days to take it all in, but our group was only there the one day. Someday, if anyone visits, we did make a memory book of our adventure at the Museum you’ll have to see it! We had a blast though and would love to get back someday!
Shortly before school started for the year we announced to Faith, Megan and Holly that they were going to get a baby brother or sister. We, the parents, thought we’d be clever about telling our girls about this, and put a shirt on Holly that says “Big Sister.” Faith and Megan didn’t really get it till we actually said ‘Mommy’s pregnant.’ It was cute, and the girls are excited.
Big sisters 1, 2 and 3 :)
At the end of August, school started yet again. Faith is in third grade this year. She has two different teachers, as they have the third graders switch around for math, language arts, and science. She will say that her favorite subject is reading, and her least favorites are history and math. But, we had her parent/ teacher conferences just as of this writing and Faith is excelling in all areas, she is the teacher’s helper (first born, yeah she’s always been that way) and a joy to have in class. Megan is in first grade this year. Megan also loves to read and is getting very good at sounding out words and using many reading strategies. She is also excelling in all areas. We are a bit concerned about some hearing issues with Megan, though, and that seems to effect some things at school, but the Drs say she is fine.
October was fairly busy. We, well Christina, had an ultrasound to check out all the parts of the baby and to make sure everything is functioning right. Before the ultrasound, as a family, we (the girls mostly) had decided that we should all find out the gender of the baby at the same time. So at the ultrasound Christina had the technician put the baby’s gender in an envelope for later.
One weekend in October the town has a pumpkin festival, where venders or non-profit groups set up a table and sell pumpkin related things and other things too. Some of the booths are just games for the kids to play. Steve gave Faith and Megan $5 for the festival to do with as they pleased. They play a lot of the games for candy. They had a lot of fun. Later that day we headed to a place called JB Tree Farm (about 30-min drive from home), where they were also having a pumpkin fest. Here they have a play area for the kids, a hayride through the trees (that will be used for Christmas Trees later), and a corn maze where you can figure your way through. Then you can pick out and pay for your pumpkin. We had a lot of fun there. We have never paid so much for a pumpkin though.
The Thursday before October 31 is “trick-or-treat night” around this area. The church we attend does a fun take on that and does Trunk-or-treat, gathering cars ‘dressed up’ in their favorite theme and has them hand out candy to the kids that come to the church. The girls all had a lot of fun that night. Christina even got in on the fun a little bit and made a shirt tailored to her belly, a pumpkin with a pacifier.
Mommy's 'costume'
Christina finally decided to give the envelope with our baby’s gender to the grandmother of a friend of Faith’s. She makes cakes as a side business. We thought she would just put the appropriate color frosting on the inside of the cake... boy were we wrong, but in a good way. What she did was make the cake, frost it and decorate the top appropriately. She put it in a box so that we couldn’t see what the top looked like. When Steve woke up that day, we called our moms and opened the box to find out that...  It’s a BOY!
In November we packed Operation Christmas Child boxes. OCC is an organization that gives boxes of essential items (toothbrush, toothpaste, combs, etc), toys and educational items to underprivileged children in other countries. Our church had a combined goal of packing 12,000 boxes, we as a family went to the packing party. The girls packed a few boxes, while Christina sat and stuck labels (‘boy’ or ‘girl’) to boxes, and Steve moved boxes – empty ones and packed ones. When the packing party weekend was all said and done our church packed more than 12,160 boxes!
To finish out the year we did a few more things that we planned.  Faith and Megan are in the community choir that Faith has been in past years. Megan is excited to join Faith and they are having a good time. The concert was the first weekend of December, they did a great job. The next weekend was the annual Christmas play at our church. Steve and Christina opted out of participating this year, Christina is tired enough haha, but we did go to watch two (Steve only went to one though) of the performances. That was the same weekend as Holly’s birthday, it’s still hard to believe that three years ago she played baby Jesus for one of the performances. My how time does fly! Steve also saw the Hobbit when it came out in the theater mid December, he went with a group of guys from church. He said it was good, didn't follow the book - of course, and is bummed that it will be three movies. Christmas was good, nice and low key. New Years will also be somewhat low key - at least Steve can take the night off. In the past we have all gotten up and ventured out to his work sight to celebrate. Now we just wait for our baby boy to be born in Feb.
A few blessings from 2010 and some hopes for 2011
It's been a strange year, 2010, dealing with a newborn/ now one year old and her big sisters; and realizing late in the year that I am dealing with a bit of PPD. SO a few blessings from this year are in order!
* I have three beautiful growing little girls
*Faith turned 6, Megan turned 5, and Holly had her first birthday this year
*I have a wonderful husband that is way too good for me!
*Though it was for a sad event, we got to see some family in April
*Grandmum came to visit!!
* Grandpa came to visit too (the girl's birthdays and for a ball game in the summer and Christmas)
*Faith donated 10 inches of hair to Locks of Love, and still has long hair!
*Faith and Megan are doing exceptionally well in school!
*We got a Wii for Steve's and my birthdays (having loads of fun on it :) )
*The girls started some extra curricular activities.... Girl Scouts (well, Megan isn't officially one, but the leaders are letting her tag along, it's great) and Faith was in a community chorus for their Christmas concert
*That wonderful hubby (with some help from some other people) gave me a deep freezer fo Christmas!! Woo hoo!!
*THIS picture was taken for me... as soon as I get the money saved up I am going to buy the jpeg of it :)
*I got a job that I L.O.V.E - A home daycare run by a friend I met at MOPS. This is what I went to school for and as an added bonus I can take Holly and Megan's preschool bus will drop her off there too. I couldn't ask for much better. Unfortunately "Miss Sara" can only have a max of 14 kiddos at one time, so me bringing in two of my own limits the amount of time I can be there. There have been days that I am there until Megan gets there cause she makes child #15.
I'm not a big "New Years Resolutions" kind of person. Some years I just can't think of anything I want to change that I'm not already working on (it's not a new resolution if you are already working on it) and other years I don't want to be disappointed come Feb when whatever it was hasn't happened. So I am not doing resolutions, but am going to mention a couple things I hope to do in 2011:
*A picture of one of the kiddos every day for the year. I've seen this done on a lot of other blogs and have thought 'I might be able to do that!' Not sure if I should do just Holly (being as how she is the one growing so quickly at the moment) with brief cameos from the older two, or if I should do all three (which would be a lot of work)... maybe what I'll do is get Holly on a daily basis and get the older two in one picture at least once a week. (Maybe this will provide something for my Friday Fotos more often)
*Freezer cooking - I've seen and heard good things about making meals ahead of time, freezing them and then having dinner basically ready for a couple of days during the week (having a deep freezer is GREAT for this!)
*I thought I had one more, but am experiencing a bit of mommy brain at the moment... if I remember I'll be sure to put in on here.
Here's to a blessed 2011!
Day 25 ~ Your day, in great detail
A day where I work or a day off...? No two days are the same around here Haha
Days when I work are more interesting because of where I work :)
Usually....
Holly will wake me up sometime between 5am-7am cause she wants to nurse. Around 7:30 I pull myself and Holly out of bed and get dressed. I make sure that Faith and Megan are dressed. If they have school I make sure that Faith has had breakfast (Megan gets breakfast at school, but we usually let her have a little something) and then I let Steve put them on their perspective buses. Holly and I head to the daycare. The day there consists of interacting with the kids there, while dealing with and feeding Holly as well (she nurses twice while there). We have morning 'recess' and circle and craft time, then a bit of free play time while Miss Sara preps lunch. Everybody eats lunch, we read a few books and then nap time (too bad I don't get to take one, I usually need it by then). Putting multiple kids to sleep at the same time is interesting! Once everyone wakes up we have snack and head outside again. This is usually the point where I have to leave to get Faith off the bus. Once we are all home, it's about time for Holly to nurse again, then (ideally) I fix dinner and let Holly have some 'solid' food. After dinner Faith and Megan get ready for bed, I get Holly ready for bed and nurse her.... all three are (on a good night) in bed by 8-8:15 for the night. Steve leaves for work about 8:30-8:45 :( (Anyone have/know of a daytime job you want to give him?) and I try (don't always succeed) to get a bit of 'housework' done... dishes or a load of laundry, have a bit of computer/internet or TV time. I then hope to get a bit of sleep before Holly wants her 'midnight' feeding. Steve gets home around 5:45, gets a few hours of shuteye... and it all starts again...
tired...? ya me too!
Day 24 ~ Where I live
Ok... I've had a long day ...and I'm tired, ...so I am going to be lazy tonight :) You get a picture of our house! We live in the town of Duncansville in the state of Pennsylvania (for now anyway) in the United states of America!
It's a greyish purple (the house behind is no longer there)
and we are sporting an Arizona flag off the front porch for the time being.
Day 23 ~ A YouTube video
We have SO many various videos on our computer that we have gotten from YouTube, that it was hard to even decide where to go with today's topic. I got to thinking about what our favorites were... and when Steve is looking at videos the girls almost always ask for one in particular... The Pixar short "For the Birds" it is so cute... but due to copyright ...whatever... the original can't be put on YouTube (and I don't like what most people have done with it)... so you get the one that the girls ask for in conjunction with "For the Birds"
This is one of Faith and Megan's favorites!
....and this is the short that is before the new Toy Story 3. I think this is one of my new favorite Pixar shorts! (this sound is a bit off from the picture... and there are a few bits cut out, but it's still good!)
Day 22 ~ A websight
Uummmmm.....
sights I frequent...
Facebook - yeah I'm addicted!
Yahoo - I check my email way too many times a day... a lot of the time I end up reading articles off of MyYahoo instead
Blogger - um yeah
Freecycle - We have gotten some amazing deals (as in free) from here - our couch (not the best looking thing)... They also have a sister sight SwapShop (have to be part of the local freecycle group first) where you can buy, sell or trade... I like being able to give/sell things that we really don't need anymore
Day 21 ~ A recipe
Seriously!? Any recipe?! .... just one?!! Oh, the things that are going through my head....
There's the enchilada recipe that we use...
There's the Hot Cocoa Mix recipe that I make at least three times during the winter...
There's our favorite way to do salmon...
There's...
Well, I am being lazy and I don't want to get up and find one from the kitchen. So you get my favorite cocoa mix, cause I make it a lot and it's easy to remember without having to go look. It comes from my other mother (AKA Grams) :)
(If you think you might like one of the other recipes, just ask!)
Gram's Hot Cocoa Mix
(everything is proportional, if you want a lot use cups, if you want a little use your 1/4 cup measure - super easy!)
6 parts powdered milk
4 parts powdered sugar
1 part cocoa powder
sift all together and keep in an air tight container (the sifting is important)
when you want some hot cocoa put 3-4 heaping spoonfuls into a mug and add hot water. You can also add marshmallows and/or creamer to taste.
Day 20 ~ A hobby of yours
I have many hobbies, as I mentioned yesterday
My first real hobby was cross stitch... we have a few things I have done around the house. And I am proud to say that Steve does pretty well at cross stitch too.
This is what he designed and stitched for his mom last Christmas
Another hobby I have had since childhood has been sewing. Steve and I both have jackets, pants (that have been worn out), and shirts that I have made. Faith and Megan have a number of dresses that I have done. I have also outfitted the baby dolls.
Here are a few things I have done in the last few years
The gift I did for Steve's cousin last Christmas
dress for Megan's 4th birthday
shirt for me... though right now it doesn't fit in the chest
originally done for Christmas 2008, but also worn in Rachel's wedding last year
dress I did for Faith's 4th birthday (she can still wear it LOL)
I also like crocheting!
A couple of afghans I have done
Steve's and the Flag (done just cause :) )
My most recent learned hobby is knitting. These are a couple of hats that I did for the girls this last year
I also like miscellaneous crafting... that is when I have time... oh wait...
